Transform Mining Towards a Zero Waste Industry
The Canada Mining Innovation Council (CMIC) has been identified and is widely recognized as the umbrella organization to coordinate innovation in the mining industry.
We are a national non-profit organization that coordinates and develops projects and programs in response to life of mine challenges defined by its industry members. Our members include mineral exploration and mining companies and their service providers, working together towards common solutions to common challenges. This allows for shared financial and technology adoption risk, faster development of solutions and wider spread benefits. Challenges are defined and prioritized, and programs developed by CMIC technical groups. CMIC technical groups are led by Canadian company vice presidents and populated by leading industry experts in the fields of mineral exploration, extraction, processing, mine waste management and energy.

By 2027, CMIC will enable deployment of technologies that reduce energy use, water use and environmental footprint by 50%.

The CMIC Towards Zero Waste Mining (TZWM) innovation strategy
The Canadian mining industry is focused on transforming how it operates through innovation. Right now, companies are working towards significant emissions reductions and the eventual elimination of mine waste and tailings at their facilities at home and abroad. The radical reduction in mining’s environmental footprint is at the core of the Canada Mining Innovation Council’s (CMIC) Towards Zero Waste Mining (TZWM) innovation strategy.
TZWM involves numerous mining companies and service providers that are investing in the development and adoption of transformational technologies that will greatly reduce waste and greenhouse gas emissions at all stages of the mining life cycle.
TZWM employs an open innovation ecosystem business model unique in the natural resources industry. The approach harnesses innovation and leverages talent, knowledge, intellectual property and existing technology from industries inside and outside of mining to create Canadian-based solutions. Technology development, deployment and adoption is accelerated by taking advantage of global assets in an open and shared intellectual property framework with an entire supply chain. It also provides technology test beds, reduces barriers to the adoption of technology and significantly reduces financial risk for all collaborators.
Board of Directors – provide leadership for the future and current directions of CMIC. Directors are senior executives from the mining and other industries.
Project Office – a team of two full time employees and 3–5 contract employees oversee the management and technical coordination of CMIC activities. This also includes lobbying the federal government and the various RDI agencies for project funding. This group also works with various RDI organizations across Canada within and outside of the mining and minerals industry to coordinate efforts, identify expertise and technologies applicable to CMIC priorities.
Technical Groups – are volunteers (10–40 per group) from the industry and service providers, where required, that define long term common technical areas, targets and technical roadmaps. They also provide oversight for projects.
