Unlocking Canada’s Mineral Wealth: Discovering Remote, Undercover & Deep Mineral Deposits

Despite the attractiveness of Canada as an exploration destination, the rate of discovery of new high-quality deposits has decreased over the past decade.

There is a need to more effectively explore in covered areas, at greater depths, in increasingly remote and northern regions of the country, and under harsh climatic conditions. The challenge is that much of the quality, pre-competitive data  that is so critical to the initial discovery stage is at a broad scale and is largely insufficient to the modern challenges for new discovery. There is thus a general barrier to the decision of where to explore for the commodity of interest.

Mineral exploration is the front end of the mining life cycle. At this stage, ore deposit discovery and characterization allows decisions to be made with regards to more efficient mining and processing, and the long-term management of the resultant waste materials.

Progress to Date

  • Created the largest minerals-related geoscience research consortium in North America comprised of 54 organizations from industry, universities and government.
  • Integrated university and industry expertise to solve industry-defined challenges.
  • Developed new geospatial software tools and workflows, which are being tested by service providers.
  • Optimized models for identifying alteration halos above buried ore deposits.
  • Secured foreign direct investment from European aerospace software companies that are supplying innovative methods for exploration data integration.
